When I was in school, one of the first science projects I did was growing sprouts. Seeing the tender white stem grow overnight was nothing short of magic. I had read the “theory” the day before in my classroom, but to witness something appear from nothing was one of the most magical and beautiful experiences of my early childhood.
Every single day, I see my toddler's face light up the same way as he sees & tastes fruits and vegetables of all shapes, sizes and colours.
What’s exhausting about his daily “adventure” is that he tries to eat everything that suits his fancy. So, I have decided to take things into my own hands.
If you are in the same boat as me, why don’t we row it together? In this blog, I’ll discuss 5 fun and safe ways to teach your pre-schooler about fruits and veggies.
Fun Ways To Teach Your Kids About Fruits & Veggies
Teaching kids about fruits and veggies is not easy. But, it’s possible.
Kids crave adventure. They love to be loved. And, they love everything they have never seen before(or have forgotten about).
They love novelty.
To make fruits and veggies “fun” for them, we’ll need to incorporate that.
In this blog, we’ll discuss exactly how to do that.
Let’s get started, shall we?
#1 Use Flashcards
This is literally the oldest trick in the book. But, it’s worth the mention.
Create a set of flashcards featuring vibrant images of different produce, along with their names.
Spend a few minutes each day going through the flashcards with your kid, encouraging them to identify each fruit or vegetable and repeat its name.
You can make it even more engaging by turning it into a game. Ask your child to find a specific fruit or vegetable among the flashcards or challenge them to remember the names of as many items as they can.
Don’t forget to reward them with something they love(or even a kiss) when they get their answers right. Not only will this improve your relationship with them, but it will also help them become emotionally mature adults.
#2 Coloring Books
When I was young, I loved to colour. Somehow, in my mind, it made the world more interesting.
If you're looking for a fun and creative way to teach your little one about fruits and vegetables, why not try using colouring books? They're a great way to spark your child's interest.
You can purchase printable files and worksheets online. You can also create your own designs using a user-friendly online tool like Canva.
As your kid colours each page, talk to them about the colours, shapes, and textures of the produce they're colouring.
Encourage them to use different shades and patterns. I love colouring as much as my kid does.
So, this is something we both do together.
#3 Tracing Worksheets
Tracing not only helps our kids improve their motor skills but also works as a great learning tool.
Print out tracing worksheets that feature simple outlines of different produce, such as apples, bananas, carrots, and tomatoes.
Provide your kid with crayons, markers, or coloured pencils, and guide them as they trace the outlines of each fruit or vegetable. Again, you can use online tools like Canva to create your own worksheet.
As they trace, talk to them about the characteristics of each item, such as the round shape of an orange or the long, skinny form of a cucumber.
#4 Plan A Colour Hunt
Choose a colour and challenge your kid to find a fruit/vegetable(or both) of that particular colour.
Let them take their time as they explore and possibly “vandalize” your refrigerator(yes, kids sometimes do that).
Look, kids love their fun. And, they love it more than anything else in the world.
To teach them anything meaningful, you will have to be creative. And, you will need to be forgiving.
After all, they deserve to make their fair share of mistakes.
Don’t forget to congratulate them when they get their fruits right.
#5 Try Online Games
In today's digital age, there are countless online resources and games designed specifically for pre-schoolers. Look for simple, age-appropriate games that focus on fruits, vegetables, and healthy eating habits.
Here are a few of my favourite ones:
Fruit Fit is an online game that teaches children about a variety of fruits and then prompts them to identify them.

I also love Fruit Quiz by Culinary Schools.

It’s simple to play. The interface is visually engaging, making learning more fun than traditional methods such as flashcards and colouring books.
Technology isn’t evil. We don’t need to shield our kids from it. In this day and age, kids spend more time on smartphones than adults do. While we do need to monitor their screen time, exposing them to the right tools at the right time can contribute significantly to their overall well-being.
Teaching Pre-Schoolers About Fruits & Vegetables
Teaching kids about fruits and vegetables has never been easier.
Technology has not only transformed our lives, it has made it all the more vibrant and colourful.
Every parent tries their very best to give their kid the best chance at life. Your little one deserves to thrive, but for that to happen, they need to develop healthy eating habits. They need to eat right to think right.
Lastly, teaching your kids about fruits and vegetables is also a great way to spend quality time with them. You can take them to a local orchard and grow an indoor/outdoor garden with them.
But, before you do that, why not start small? Why not help them identify common fruits and vegetables first? Their education is in our hands. And, I’m sure, you are doing your very best.
As parents, we don’t just need to help them navigate the world around them. We need to explore it with them. Engaging in these simple activities is an excellent way to do that.
